Nissan will carry out a phased restart of its U.S. manufacturing operations beginning in early June. The company’s vehicle assembly plant in Canton, Miss. and powertrain plant in Decherd, Tenn. plan to resume production on June 1, followed by its Smyrna, Tenn. vehicle assembly plant on June 8. The INFINITI Decherd Powertrain Plant resumed limited production on May 1. “We have planned our manufacturing restart with care, mindful that the impact of COVID-19 continues," said Steve Marsh, senior vice president, Manufacturing, Supply Chain Management and Purchasing, Nissan North America, Inc. “The process will be gradual. Our first priority is to implement thorough protocols so employees are confident the necessary precautions have been taken to ensure their safety in the workplace." more Nissan has created a comprehensive playbook — Safe Start-Up — to guide employees on the new health and safety protocols. Safe Start-Up includes best practices and recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other government agencies. Some of the safety protocols include: • Daily health self-certifications for all employees and visitors. Employees or visitors who indicate they may have symptoms or may have been exposed to COVID-19 will not be allowed to enter any Nissan worksite. • Modifications to workstations, staggered shift and break times, and minimal job rotations, to adhere to social distancing guidelines. • Disbursement of additional personal protective equipment, including face shields and masks. • Enhanced disinfection protocols for workstations, common areas and shared tools. Production shift patterns also will be adjusted as necessary to support the phased restart plan and match production with current market demand. "As production increases, we will continue to assess and implement the necessary controls in line with any updated guidelines from government agencies and feedback from employees," Marsh said.

Nissan is extending all eligible, previously expired NissanConnect® Services Premium Plus trials by three complimentary months. Customers eligible for this offer have been contacted via email and informed that the extension can be activated through June 30. It is Nissan’s latest effort to support customers in new ways during the COVID-19 pandemic. The free trial – originally offered for a six-month period – includes safety and security services that help provide peace of mind during this uncertain time, including Automatic Crash Notification, Emergency Call, Connection to Roadside Assistance, and a number of remote services that can be used on the NissanConnect Services mobile app. “As people deal with uncertainty and change in the world, we want to give owners support and peace of mind,” said Dan Teeter, director, Vehicle Connected Services, Nissan North America, Inc. “Our hope is to bring some much-needed comfort to our customers with this NissanConnect Services trial extension.” more Nissan Concierge is also included in NissanConnect Services for 2019 Altima Edition ONE and 2020 TITAN owners. Nissan Concierge provides live, 24-hour access to a professionally trained concierge team available to assist owners with a variety of everyday tasks. Since the onset of the pandemic, Nissan Concierge has helped customers find nearby COVID-19 testing stations, modified grocery store hours, new home workout routines and creative activities for children, among other tasks. The service can be accessed in equipped Nissan vehicles, or while owners are at home by using the NissanConnect Services app for smartphone, smartwatch or voice assistant. Nissan Concierge will be offered on several additional Nissan models for the 2021 model year. Nissan continues to lend support in a variety of other ways. Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation (NMAC) is currently offering three months of delayed payments and will cover payments for up to two additional months for well-qualified buyers financing through NMAC on select new Nissan models. To date, NMAC has assisted more than 280,000 existing Nissan owners with payment deferrals due to the impact of the crisis. Nissan’s manufacturing facilities in Tennessee and Mississippi, research and design center in Michigan, and the Alliance Innovation Lab in Silicon Valley, California, are using 3D printers to print headbands and assemble protective face shields for front-line healthcare facility workers.

Nissan is offering tips on how to disinfect your vehicle as we aim to stop the spread of COVID-19. Frequent hand washing as directed by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is a crucial part of staying healthy, but so is disinfecting surfaces, including those in your car. "Most people are still using their vehicles, whether they are essential employees commuting to work or someone running to the grocery store while in quarantine," said Ryan Fulkerson, director, New Model Engineering, Nissan North America. "We want to make sure they're informed on how to best keep their vehicle disinfected." The CDC recommends wearing disposable gloves for cleaning and then disinfecting surfaces. If a surface appears dirty, it should be wiped down with soap and water prior to disinfection. For vehicle interiors, a soft or microfiber cloth dampened with soap and water can be used to wipe down hard surfaces. more While most common household disinfectants are effective, some are not ideal for use on a vehicle including bleach, hydrogen peroxide, benzene, thinners or other harsh and abrasive cleaners. These chemical products can damage your vehicle's upholstery and/or interior surfaces. Instead, alcohol-based wipes or sprays containing at least 70% alcohol are effective against the coronavirus according to the CDC, and can be safely used in your vehicle. The infotainment screen is tricky because it's a high-touch area that should not come in contact with aggressive cleaners. Use screen wipes or a soft cloth dampened with soap and water to clean the screen surface. Wipe dry with a clean, soft cloth. Ammonia-based cleaners should not be used on infotainment screens, as they can damage the anti-glare and anti-fingerprint coatings. If the vehicle is equipped, using voice commands can help avoid touching the center screen altogether. Nissan is providing a checklist to help you remember vehicles surfaces to regularly disinfect: • Steering wheel • Key and remote fob • Exterior door handles, both sides • Trunk lid or lift gate grab areas • Interior door pulls, both sides and interior door panels • Start button, if equipped • Rear view mirror, back and edges • HVAC vents • Gear selector • Turn signal lever • Windshield wiper controls • Center stack knobs • Center console and arm rest • Seat belt and buckle. Avoid harsh cleaners on the belt itself, they can degrade the fibres and the belt's strength • Parking brake handle, parking brake or release lever If a vehicle requires more attention, remember that automotive dealerships and their service departments are deemed essential services while many businesses around the country are closed in response to government mandates aimed at slowing the spread of COVID-19. As a result, many Nissan service departments remain open and are available to assist with vehicle service and repairs. Many are offering no-contact drop off or at-home pick-up and delivery.

It all starts with a single line. That is the message from Nissan's global design team as it looks to connect a worldwide community of artists through the new #DrawDrawDraw social project. Nissan is offering 23 newly created, downloadable coloring pages featuring beloved Nissan classic cars, current models, futuristic concepts and even some "cult classic" models, such as the Nissan Figaro and ChoiMobi. Nissan designers from around the world created the pages over the last few weeks, a time during which many people have been staying home because of the global coronavirus pandemic. "To draw, draw, draw, in our world, is one of the best ways to close the gap between wonderful creative impulses in your head and making it a reality – especially as we face this global pandemic together," said Alfonso Albaisa, Nissan's senior vice president for global design. "Our team of designers, worldwide, are using this time to breathe, to draw, to dream creatively. I know that some of their best work will come from the challenges that we're facing now. So we thought, 'Why not give everyone a chance to express themselves creatively and share it with those who will appreciate it?'" more Albaisa is launching this effort with a video from his home, and with input from his two young sons, showing what he is currently drawing and why. Designers from his team will post additional videos in coming weeks to talk about their design inspirations, what they are drawing, how they became car designers, and tips for those looking to break into the business. "Our inspiration for this project came from Nissan designer Giovanny Arroba, the creative mind behind the recently unveiled Ariya Concept car," said Albaisa. "Gio was asked for advice on becoming a car designer. He said, simply and beautifully, 'Draw like crazy. Draw, draw, draw.'" Nissan is asking individuals to tag their drawings, from sidewalk art to napkin sketches to the downloaded coloring book pictures, with #drawdrawdraw. "We're looking forward to celebrating passion and creativity," said Albaisa. "Don't be surprised if you see a Nissan designer comment on your drawings and artwork." There are a few simple vehicle-care techniques for drivers to remember when they may not be driving, or driving infrequently. "The shelter-in-place orders in effect throughout much of the United States and Canada mean that many vehicles are seeing infrequent, if any, use," said Ryan Fulkerson, director, New Model Engineering, Nissan North America. "The longer a vehicle sits unused, the more likely it is to develop issues. By taking a few key steps, drivers can keep their cars running smoothly." Here are five tips from Nissan: • Keep the battery charged – a short drive or a trickle charger will work. • Drive around the block – this keeps the battery charged and fluids circulating. • Check the fluids – maintaining proper oil and transmission fluid levels will prevent problems down the road. • Maintain recommended tire pressure – this helps to prevent flat spots when your vehicle is sitting. • Wash your vehicle regularly – this helps to protect the paint, especially for vehicles parked outdoors. more "Following some of these tips will help to keep your car in shape," said Fulkerson. "Washing a car yourself can also relieve boredom and be a great activity for the entire family." It's a trend that's been hard to miss lately: Many new cars have bulky, tablet-like screens smack in the middle of the dashboard. While these super-sized displays may grab attention at motor shows, carmakers working to create next-generation vehicles also have other things to consider as they attempt to balance design, technology and utility. Nissan chose a different path when developing the display for the Nissan Ariya Concept, prioritizing design and vision over the latest trends. Instead of a tablet, the electric crossover has a curved, two-screen display reminiscent of a wave. It adds to the sense of a "horizon" throughout the car, from elements in the door all the way to the rear of the cabin. The layout reflects Nissan's new Timeless Japanese Futurism design language, also expressed in the Ariya Concept's unique frontal "shield." But the horizontal design wasn't chosen for its good looks alone. more "The human eye naturally looks from side to side when driving," explains Tomomichi Uekuri, senior manager of HMI engineering team. "People can see and absorb more information if it's laid out horizontally. Peripheral vision works this way as well." In addition to conveying information better for the human eye, the layout does so from a safer location — in the line of sight, closer to the road. By matching the cabin's horizon aesthetic, it becomes a seamless part of the dashboard. Nissan's design team calls this engawa – the undefined space between where you are, and where you are going. The Nissan Ariya Concept's display keeps driving information in an instrument cluster location similar to that of a traditional car, while displaying entertainment information, comfort controls and system status in the center screen. Both are wrapped together in a sleek panel that flows seamlessly between driver and passenger. Even though there are two screens, information can move or be swiped between them to create the feeling of a single display. For example, if you want your route directions and map in front of the steering wheel, they can appear there. They can also move to the center, or disappear when no longer needed. "The display's wave construction is innovative and utilizes an ergonomic layout for both the meter display and the center display, not only for visibility, but also allows the driver to easily reach the center display touch screen," Uekuri explains. Like other parts of the Ariya Concept, the display is meant to convey a fully functional impression. From music to GPS, it was important for the designers and engineers to show the world what a near-future Nissan could achieve. The user experience is even demonstrated at the granular level, allowing the driver to adjust how much data is shown in each location, removing unnecessary information from the driver's peripheral. It took the design team many iterations to arrive at the Ariya Concept's innovative display. The team built similar displays into a large black "box" that they affectionately named "the Monolith," a nod to the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey." They chipped away, figuratively speaking, at the housing until it became what's seen in the final concept car. As a result, the sleek, seamless display looks like a natural, integrated part of the Nissan Ariya Concept's interior design – not a slab out of time and place.

The 2020 Nissan Pathfinder and Maxima have been named to Parents Magazine's list of Best Family Cars for 2020.
