Join Nissan in celebration of National Dog Day on Aug. 26 with a pledge to help keep your pets safe when traveling by car. In a recent study1, Nissan found that due to COVID-19, 71 percent of consumers are more comfortable traveling by car than airplane this summer. The pandemic has also seen a rise in pet adoptions. According to Rover.com, more than 60 percent of recent adoptions are by those with little or no previous pet experience. Among the list of firsts for new owners is how to travel safely in the car with their animal. Out of convenience, many owners may allow their dogs to sit in the back seat or place them in the cargo area of their vehicle unrestrained. The American Automobile Association recently reported that 84 percent of Americans have driven with their pet in the car, yet only 16 percent use any form of restraint. In the same study, one in six admitted to driving with a dog on their lap. more "Often drivers may hit the road and just have their pet jump in the back seat for the ride. For a small investment and an extra minute or two, you can take steps to help ensure your pet is secured in the car," said Brandon Sanders, product safety expert, Nissan North America. "An unrestrained pet can be a distraction and also poses a greater risk of injury to human occupants." Tips to properly secure a pet in your car: Buckle up: One recommended way to secure a pet is to use a chest-style harness in the rear seating position. Run a seat belt through a loop on the back of the pet harness, or under the back or the harness itself. Always consult the pet harness information manual for instruction on proper vehicle use. This is an excellent solution to ensure that medium- to large-size dogs stay seated during a trip. Use a tether: Another option is using a pet restraint tether, often referred to as a pet seat belt. This type of restraint offers an inexpensive and quick solution for securing pets. As the name implies, this restraint clips to the pet's collar or harness and is often affixed to your vehicle by either clipping into the seatbelt buckle or child-seat anchor to help keep your dog from moving around the vehicle. Crates and carriers: Utilizing a secured pet carrier or kennel is another way to travel safely with pets. Smaller dogs can be housed in portable-style carrier that can be secured in the vehicle's second row using seat belts or pillows to help limit movement. Smaller carriers can also be placed on the floor behind one of the front seats. Medium and large-sized pets should be placed in a sturdier kennel secured to the vehicle cargo area in SUVs or trucks. In either instance, the kennel should be fastened to the vehicle as securely as possible. Set boundaries: Cargo area dividers can be used to help keep pets behind the last row of an SUV. These are a great way to keep large dogs out of the occupant space when traveling. It's best to still secure the pet in the cargo area. Remember that a vehicle can also offer built-in convenience for pet travel. Nissan opens new Heritage Zone at Nissan Gallery Nissan’s Heritage Zone is a new permanent public exhibition space at the company’s Yokohama HQ, and is dedicated to sharing the company’s rich history and showcasing its classic cars. The Heritage Zone’s cars are ordinarily housed, restored and meticulously maintained in the Nissan Heritage garage in Zama. The garage contains models ranging from Nissan’s first mass-produced vehicle, the Datsun 14, to sports cars such as the Nissan Fairlady and GT-R and legendary race cars. After more than a million miles of hard work, Brian Murphy's 2007 Nissan Frontier is headed home. Today, Murphy swapped his "Million-Mile" Frontier for a new 2020 Frontier at M'Lady Nissan in Crystal Lake, the same dealership where he bought his 2007 Frontier more than 13 years ago. The Million Mile Frontier will retire where it was assembled, the Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. Nissan first celebrated Murphy and his million miler during the reveal of the 2020 Frontier at the Chicago Auto Show in February. During a short ceremony on Tuesday, Nissan presented Murphy with a new 2020 Frontier, which is now available at select Nissan dealers nationwide with a starting MSRP1 of $26,790. "Brian Murphy is the quintessential Frontier owner, so it's fitting that he will be driving one of the first 2020 Frontier pickups in America," said Craig Keeys, regional vice president, Nissan Midwest Region, Nissan North America. "Thank you, Brian, for illustrating the durability and reliability of the Frontier for more than 13 years and one million miles." more The 2020 Nissan Frontier features an all-new, powerful 3.8-liter direct injection V6 engine and all-new 9-speed automatic transmission – featuring best-in-class horsepower2 and improved fuel economy3. That will be a significant upgrade for all Frontier owners, and especially for Murphy, whose 2007 Frontier still has its original 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed manual transmission. According to Murphy – an independent delivery driver who regularly spends 13 hours a day on the road – the original clutch on his Frontier King Cab lasted 801,000 miles, the timing chain was replaced as preventative at 700,000 miles, and the radiator and alternator lasted about 450,000 miles each. Even the driver's seat lasted a half-million miles before being replaced. And though it still "runs great," said Murphy, he's ready for his new 2020 Frontier SV King Cab 4x4. "I'll miss this truck, no doubt, but I'm glad it's going back 'home' to Smyrna," said Murphy. "At the same time, I'm ready for my next chapter, and I can't wait to experience my new Frontier and its all-new powertrain. I know that this 2020 Frontier will bring the same durability that I've relied on for over 13 years." Murphy, 62, says he'd like to reduce his work hours over the next few years, making a "Million-Mile Frontier 2" unlikely – but not completely out of the picture. "I'd never say never – especially in a Frontier." While Murphy's 2007 Frontier came off the assembly line in Smyrna, the 2020 Frontier is now assembled at the Nissan Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant in Canton, Mississippi. The Canton plant will also be the home of the forthcoming, all-new Frontier.

A new chapter is unfolding at Nissan evidenced by four of its vehicles earning top segment honors in the J.D. Power 2020 Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM, released today. Nissan’s four segment wins were the most of any mass market brand in the 2020 APEAL study. The all-new 2020 Sentra turned in the best performance for Nissan, scoring 42 points above its segment average (compact car). The all-new Versa scored 41 points ahead of segment average (small car); Maxima was 30 points ahead of segment average (large car); and Armada ranked 25 points ahead of its segment average (large SUV).
