Long before LEAF: the 1947 Tama electric car
On the cusp of the next-generation Nissan LEAF that arrives later this year, we look back at the company’s early EV roots
During the 1940s’ switch to a peacetime economy, around 200 Tachikawa Aircraft employees moved to the newly established Tokyo Electro Automobile Co., Ltd., which embarked on the development of an electric car. One reason for this was the extreme shortage of gasoline at the time. In 1947, the company succeeded in creating a prototype 2-seater truck (500-kg load capacity) with a 4.5-horsepower motor and a new body design. It was named “Tama” after the area where the company was based.
Its top speed was 34 km/h (21 mph). Next, the company created its first passenger car. With two doors and seating for four, it boasted a top speed of 35 km/h (22 mph) and a cruising range of 65 km (40 miles) on a single charge. The former aircraft maker employed many unique ideas in the design and construction of the Tama, such as its battery compartments.

Nissan 370Z Roadster named “Best Performance Roadster” by Southern Automotive Media Association
The Nissan 370Z Roadster was named the “Best Performance Roadster” by the Southern Automotive Media Association (SAMA) during the independent media group’s annual “Topless in Miami” event. The iconic 370Z was noted for its styling, the ease of its convertible top operation, its quietness and, of course, its performance. More than two dozen vehicles were included in the annual event, in which vehicles are judged in various categories.
“Since it returned to the market over a decade ago, the 370Z has been a fine example of what a sports car is all about – comfort, fun, and an exhilarating driving performance in one package,” said Jaime Florez, SAMA president. “It is always a popular entry among our members, who have recognized it as best in its class twice in the seven years of competition.”

Nissan to offer standard Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) on one million U.S. vehicles in 2018 model year
Nissan today announced that it is making Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) standard on a projected one million vehicles sold in the United States for model year 2018, including seven of the company’s most popular models – Rogue/Rogue Sport, Altima, Murano, LEAF, Pathfinder, Maxima and Sentra (except manual transmission-equipped and all NISMO versions).
AEB (previously known as Forward Emergency Braking) uses radar technology to monitor a vehicle’s proximity to the vehicle ahead, giving the driver audible and visual display warnings to help the driver reduce the vehicle’s speed if a potential frontal collision is detected. If the driver fails to respond, the AEB system can apply the brakes, helping the driver to avoid the collision or reduce the speed of impact if it is unavoidable.
