Nissan is making Rear Door Alert technology standard on more models to remind customers to check the back seat and help reduce potential heatstroke incidents.

Originally developed by two mothers who are also engineers, Rear Door Alert reminds owners to check the rear seat upon exiting their vehicle by using a series of distinctive honks as the driver walks away from the vehicle. Nissan is the first automaker to use a honking horn as an alert for this type of feature.

“I’m proud to see Nissan lead the way by making Rear Door Alert standard on more models,” said Marlene Mendoza, a mechanical engineer who helped create the technology. “What started as a chat with my colleague, Elsa Foley, is now innovative technology being adopted in more Nissan models. It is a testament to Nissan’s culture.” Read the rest of this entry »

The countdown to Nissan’s debut in the Formula E electric street racing championship is now officially underway after the checkered flag was waved in the final round of the Season 4 championship in New York on Sunday. Nissan will join the series for Season 5 which kicks off in December.

Nissan is the first Japanese brand to join the championship and will race in 12 different venues around the world in 2018 and 2019.

As part of Nissan’s Formula E countdown, the brand gave local media a preview of its plans in Brooklyn, New York on Friday before the New York ePrix.

The Nissan Formula E car was joined by the second-generation Nissan LEAF. Global Motorsport Director Michael Carcamo and Nissan North America’s EV Sales and Marketing Director, Brian Maragno also attended the media event.

“Season 5 for Nissan has now officially begun,” Carcamo said. “Our goal is to be as best prepared as we can be and we’ve been laying the groundwork for quite some time. As part of our preparations for our Season 5 debut, I’ve been on site at each race this season to take a close look at the championship and our competitors.”

Carcamo said Nissan plans to use its EV expertise to ensure the team hits energy management targets on the track.

Nissan topped three vehicle segments and finished in the top three in two others in the 2018 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (IQS). J.D. Power IQS is the industry benchmark for new vehicle quality. This year, the Nissan brand improved by eight problems per hundred vehicles (PP100) to an overall average of just 85 PP100, which was best performance of all non-luxury Japanese brands.

The 2018 Nissan Frontier was the top-rated Midsize Pickup for the third consecutive year, while Maxima won Large Car honors with 57 PP100, the second highest score of any vehicle in the study. The popular Nissan Altima took top honors in the competitive Midsize Car segment with a 65 PP100 score, good for sixth among all vehicles in the survey and an 18-point improvement from the 2017 study.

The all-new 100-percent electric Nissan LEAF was another bright spot among many for the brand, with a 17-point improvement in initial vehicle quality over the car’s previous generation surveyed in 2017.
