You're about to depart on your daily commute, with a million things on your to-do list once you get to work. If only you could work in your car. While we aren't there yet, the accelerated pace at which automakers and tech companies are introducing vehicle prototypes and automated drive features has left some stakeholders behind. On one hand there's excitement. On the other hand there's concern. Nissan addressed both this month when it hosted a forum that explored the future of autonomous vehicles. The event, held in Washington, D.C., gave lawmakers, regulators and other U.S. government officials a close and reassuring look at how Nissan is in the driver's seat when it comes to automated drive technologies. more Andy Christensen, senior manager, Nissan Technical Center North America in Michigan, explained how Nissan's perspective is different from other approaches that seem focused only on removing the driver from the driving experience. Nissan's philosophy is not to simply replace the driver in an automated vehicle. Instead, Nissan wants to enhance the driver's experience by introducing technologies that make cars more intelligent and more exciting partners. "Someday, when drivers want, the technology will be available to do the driving task for them," said Christensen. "But at Nissan, we see the driver remaining engaged and integral well into the future." It's really an evolution. Traditionally, how to drive the car "was always left up to the human driver."
Nissan today announced that the 2017 Altima has been named the top scoring mid-size car in the Strategic Vision Total Quality Impact (TQI) Awards. The 2017 Altima had a total evaluation score of 606 out of a possible 1,000 – more than 60 points above the segment average. Strategic Vision's 23rd annual Total Quality Impact (TQI) report is based on results from the New Vehicle Experience Study® (NVES) surveying over 42,000 Jul.-Dec. new vehicle buyers after the first 90 days of ownership. The TQI rating system allows owners to fully reflect their experiences with their vehicles, including tangible aspects such as acceleration and visibility, intangible aspects such as vehicle image, emotional aspects and involvement, as well as a comprehensive survey of the number and severity of the vehicle problems reported. more According to the study results, Altima stood out in categories such as seat comfort, interior design, thoughtful engineering and interior versatility. Quoting an Altima owner from the study: "I have fallen in love with how beautiful this car looks. Everything on the exterior is really a plus because the journey begins on the inside and with how much you will enjoy the experience of driving this vehicle." The study editors added: "Most importantly, ( Altima) delivers what its buyers hope for when they purchase. This kind of emotional delivery leads to greater loyalty later down the road." Altima is Nissan's second best-selling model, following the Nissan Rogue, selling nearly 150,000 units in the first six months of 2017. It was redesigned for the 2016 model year and has added a new Altima SR Midnight Edition for 2017. The Midnight Edition features black 18-inch Midnight Edition aluminum-alloy wheels and low-profile 235/45R18 all-season tires, black mirror caps, black rear spoiler, LED headlights, Remote Engine Start1 and available Midnight Edition floor mats. Beginning in June 2017, Altima 2.5 SV, 2.5 SL and 3.5 SL grades added Forward Emergency Braking (FEB)2 and Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW)3 as standard equipment. "The 2017 Altima anchors Nissan's sedan lineup, offering the style, performance, technology – and award-winning quality – that was recognized by owners participating in the Strategic Vision TQI study," said Scott Shirley, vice president, Nissan Chief Marketing Manager & Marketing Operations. On the cusp of the next-generation Nissan LEAF that arrives later this year, we look back at the company's early EV roots During the 1940s' switch to a peacetime economy, around 200 Tachikawa Aircraft employees moved to the newly established Tokyo Electro Automobile Co., Ltd., which embarked on the development of an electric car. One reason for this was the extreme shortage of gasoline at the time. In 1947, the company succeeded in creating a prototype 2-seater truck (500-kg load capacity) with a 4.5-horsepower motor and a new body design. It was named "Tama" after the area where the company was based. Its top speed was 34 km/h (21 mph). Next, the company created its first passenger car. With two doors and seating for four, it boasted a top speed of 35 km/h (22 mph) and a cruising range of 65 km (40 miles) on a single charge. The former aircraft maker employed many unique ideas in the design and construction of the Tama, such as its battery compartments. more The Tama came in passenger car and truck models, and both were available in gasoline and electric versions. In 1948, Tama Junior, a compact passenger car, was born. Then, in 1949, came the Tama Senior, a medium-size passenger car. In 1951, this company merged with Prince Motor, which in 1966 became part of Nissan. The Tama electric car replaceable battery The battery compartment was in the cabin floor of the Tama electric car. There were two such compartments, one on either side. Each battery case was provided with rollers so that used batteries could be quickly exchanged with freshly charged ones.
