13-year-old Nissan Frontier delivers a million miles and counting

Murphy's Law doesn't apply to Brian Murphy, a Chicagoland delivery driver who set a goal in 2007 to put a million miles on his Nissan Frontier pickup truck. On workdays, Murphy starts before sunrise and returns home about 13 hours later. He drove about 50,000 hours to rack up the million miles on his pickup — a two-wheel-drive, 4-cylinder, 5-speed manual 2007 Frontier King Cab with a Red Brawn exterior that still has its original engine and transmission. A million miles is about the same distance as two roundtrips to the Moon. "I had no doubt this truck would hit a million miles. It's tough and gets great fuel economy2, exactly what I need to get the job done," said Murphy. "I change my own oil every 10,000 miles and drive carefully. Nothing major has been replaced on this truck, it's really something." For other routine maintenance, the truck has been serviced at M'Lady Nissan in Crystal Lake, the same dealership where the 62-year-old Murphy bought the vehicle new in June 2007. more "Brian Murphy is the perfect Frontier customer. It's encouraging to hear exceptional stories like this and to know our vehicles are dependably serving customers – let alone for a million miles," said Tiago Castro, director, Nissan Commercial Vehicles. According to Murphy, the original clutch lasted 801,000 miles, the timing chain was replaced as preventative at 700,000 miles, and the radiator and alternator lasted about 450,000 miles each. Even the driver's seat lasted a half-million miles before being replaced. The U.S. Department of Transportation3 says males in Murphy's age group drive an average of 15,859 miles per year. Murphy drives, on average, about 77,000 miles per year. The digital odometer stopped tracking at 999,999 miles on January 27, 2020, but the trip odometer kept rolling to prove the truck now has over a million miles. Murphy began his career as a delivery truck driver 45 years ago in the Chicago area. He "retired" from corporate America 16 years ago and started his part-time job as an independent delivery driver in 2007. He has never used GPS to guide him on his route, and his driving record is free of any moving violations. "My truck deserves to rest, but I've got to keep busy," said Murphy. The "Million-Mile" Frontier was built at Nissan Smyrna Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee. The company invited Murphy and his family to an event during the 2020 Chicago Auto Show. The 2020 TITAN features the most standard power, safety features and technology in its class

The family of 2020 Nissan TITAN full-size pickups receives an extensive redesign for the 2020 model year, featuring substantial powertrain updates and unique styling across trim levels. TITAN now also offers standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 across all grade levels. All told, the new 2020 TITAN offers the most standard power, safety features and technology in its class1. Nissan continues to provide America's Best Truck Warranty5 for the 2020 TITAN, with 5-year/100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper coverage. Best-in-class standard horsepower and torque, new 9-speed transmission Every 2020 TITAN is powered by a 5.6-liter Endurance® V8 gasoline engine rated at 400 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque. Both standard horsepower and torque ratings are the best-in-class2 (premium fuel required). The engine is mated with a new 9-speed automatic transmission with a larger final gear ratio of 3.692:1– providing more torque at the wheels in a given gear and smoother and faster acceleration. For example, 50 mph to 70 mph acceleration is estimated to have been improved by almost a full second (compared to the previous TITAN equipped with a 7-speed automatic transmission). The larger range also means better range coverage for optimal power on standing starts and at cruising speeds. The powertrain feel is more linear through the gears. more The engine utilizes Nissan's VVEL (Variable Valve Event & Lift) technology, which combines hydraulic-controlled variable valve timing and electronically controlled variable valve lift on the intake side to provide high performance and crisp response. The Endurance® V8 also features Direct Injection Gas (DIG™) technology, which provides better wide-open throttle performance and improved fuel economy and emissions performance (versus a non-direct-injection system) by reducing engine knock, improving combustion stability and offering precise injection control. The 2020 TITAN is available in a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 drive configurations. Nissan TITAN 4x4 models feature a transfer case designed to ensure maximum power distribution in every gear. It distributes torque to both ends and provides four-wheel drive when added traction is needed on snow, ice, sand, mud, dirt, water or gravel. Durable off-road performance has also been emphasized, with features such as Hill Descent Control (PRO-4X only), Hill Start Assist, Brake Limited-Slip Differential (BLSD) and available electronic locking rear differential (PRO-4X). The 2020 TITAN features an enhanced Off Road Gauge that displays the vehicle's tire angle, relative pitch and roll angles. Without using a gyroscope, a new method was developed to calculate the vehicle's orientation using accelerometer data and calculating the vehicle's G-force. Nissan's new gauge is expected to be the most accurate (versus competition) at higher speeds. Every 2020 TITAN also utilizes a durable chassis design, starting with the fully boxed, full-length ladder frame. The front suspension is a double-wishbone design, while a rigid rear axle suspension utilizes hefty leaf springs and leaf bushings, along with twin-tube shock absorbers. Hefty stabilizer bars are utilized front and rear. PRO-4X models feature Bilstein mono-tube off-road shocks. Hydraulic cab-mounts help isolate occupants from the chassis. The 2020 TITAN rides on a choice of 18-inch steel, newly designed 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels or 20-inch aluminum-alloy wheels – depending on grade or option level. Tire choices include 265/75R18, 265/70R18, 275/60R20 all-season or 275/70R18 all-terrain tires. Braking is provided by a 4-wheel disc system with 13.78 x 1.2-inch front/13.58 x 0.8-inch rear ventilated discs front and rear with hydraulic power assist. The high brake fluid pressure generated by an electric pump assists brake pedal force for a confident feel. Responsive steering is provided by a rack-and-pinion steering system. The 2020 TITAN again offers confident available towing, utility features and driving aids, including an Integrated Trailer Brake Controller, Trailer Sway Control (TSC), Tow/Haul Mode with Downhill Speed Control and a Trailer Light Check system that allows one-person hook-up operation – including checking turn signals, brake lights and running/clearance lights. It offers an available maximum towing capacity of 9,370 pounds6 and maximum payload capacity of 1,680 pounds7 when properly equipped. First-class interior with available high-resolution 9" touchscreen The sense of commanding technology continues into the redesigned TITAN interior, which combines first-class accommodations with a sense of crafted detailing and premium finishes. TITAN's standard 8.0-inch center area display is the largest standard screen in the class, while the available Integrated Command Center with 9.0-inch touchscreen (standard on PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve) features WXGA resolution – higher than HD. It serves as the gateway to the 2020 TITAN's enhanced next-generation connectivity that includes standard Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™. The internal Wi-Fi router allows rear seat passengers to stream their favorite content (Wi-Fi data subscription required, sold separately). Up to seven devices can be connected. A 7.0-inch programmable driver information display is nearly three inches larger than most competitors' displays and helps ensure that customers can access meaningful vehicle information easily and clearly. TITAN Crew Cab model occupants are treated to a new available Dual Panel Panoramic Moonroof, the first offered on TITAN, measuring over three-feet square. Standard with NissanConnect® in the 2020 TITAN is Nissan Concierge, which provides owners 24-hour access to a live assistants at the push of a button from inside the vehicle, or outside via email, text of the NissanConnect Services App. Nissan Concierge assistants can help with a range of tasks from directions to restaurant reservations, appointment scheduling, wake up calls and even personal shopping. The next-generation NissanConnect® allows over-the-air (OTA) software updates, new safety and security features, HD Traffic and Google Places/Search10. Also available on the 2020 TITAN is NissanConnect Services, a suite of convenience and security features that provide assistance when owners need it most – including remote access features and emergency response services. NissanConnect Services can be accessed from inside the vehicle, on a computer, on a smartphone or smartwatch app and with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. TITAN's Fender® Premium Audio System returns for a second year. It includes 12 speakers with Crew Cab and 10 speakers on King Cab. The Fender® Bassman Subwoofer helps drive energetic, powerful bass response with ear-pleasing precision. The system's 485-watt, 9-channel amplifier with Panasonic's proprietary Acoustic Motion Control™, which renders the reverberation and ambience of original recordings with stunning realism. Every 2020 TITAN includes front and rear outboard Zero Gravity seats that help maximize posture positioning for enhanced comfort during long distance driving. Heating and cooling front seats are available. Heated front and rear seats are available in both cloth and leather trim levels. The 2020 TITAN's first-class interior accommodations include specially selected seat and trim materials and finishers for each grade level. Interior storage has also been enhanced, including a new, innovative flexible smartphone holder/charging system. Elsewhere, additional assist grips allow for more assistance getting in and out of the vehicle. Standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 with class-exclusive standard Rear Automatic Braking The 2020 TITAN is a showcase for Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies, starting with standard Nissan Safety Shield 360 – a suite of six advanced driver-assist systems. Safety Shield 360 includes Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW), High Beam Assist (HBA) and class-exclusive standard Rear Automatic Braking (RAB)3. The new TITAN also features a number of other available advanced technologies – Intelligent Forward Collision Warning (I-FCW), Intelligent Around View® Monitor9 (I-AVM), Intelligent Cruise Control (ICC), Intelligent Driver Alertness (I-DA)11 and Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR). Nissan's innovative Rear Door Alert (RDA)12 is standard on all grade levels. And, the 2020 TITAN now includes eight air bags (versus the previous six) and four seat belt pretensioners (versus the previous two). The available Intelligent Around View® Monitor (I-AVM)9 provides a composite "bird's eye" view of the surrounding area from front, rear and side cameras to help with parking and pulling in and out of tight spaces and even off-roading at low speeds. The system also includes Moving Object Detection (MOD), which helps alert the driver to detected moving objects around the vehicle via an on-screen notification and warning chime.

Nissan’s twin-motor all-wheel-control is a force to be reckoned with

Nissan is elevating the performance capability of electric vehicles with its new twin-motor all-wheel-control technology called e-4ORCE. The technology provides instant torque to all four wheels to deliver balanced, predictable power and handling on par with many premium sports cars. The “e” represents Nissan’s technologies enabled by a 100% electric motor drive system. “4ORCE,” pronounced “force,” evokes physical power and energy with “4” standing for the all-wheel control driving capability. “The e-4ORCE twin-motor all-wheel control technology offers precise handling and stability, which gives drivers greater confidence and even more excitement than ever before,” said Takao Asami, Nissan’s senior vice president of research and advanced engineering. “This technology enables excellent cornering performance and traction on slippery surfaces and comfortable ride for all passengers.” more The technology was born from lessons learned in the development of the Nissan GT-R's ATTESA E-TS torque split system and the Nissan Patrol's intelligent 4X4 system. Engineers developed the e-4ORCE technology to specifically manage electric vehicle power output and braking performance to be smooth and stable. Unparalleled ride comfort is the result of the e-4ORCE technology’s ability to minimize vehicle pitch and dive. This is accomplished by employing regenerative braking from both front and rear motors, making city stop-and-go traffic less jostling. Similarly, on rough, bumpy roads and when accelerating, motor control is optimized to maintain ride comfort by minimizing irregular movement. e-4ORCE increases driver confidence by faithfully tracing the driver's intended line thanks to ultra-high-precision motor and brake control. With the confidence to handle such a variety of road surfaces, even for novice drivers on slippery surfaces, driving becomes more enjoyable. Nissan will be displaying its zero-emission crossover Ariya Concept — which features e-4ORCE — at its CES booth but the company is also showcasing the technology on a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive technology test car in Las Vegas during CES. CES 2020 runs from Jan. 7-10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Nissan welcomes all attendees to its display (6306) in the North Hall.

Nissan Altima’s 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine named to ‘Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems’ list for 2020

Delivering the power of a V6 and the fuel efficiency of a four-cylinder1, Nissan Altima's 2.0-liter VC-Turbo™ engine is named to "Wards 10 Best Engines & Propulsion Systems" list for 2020. The team behind the innovative powertrain will be recognized at a private industry event in Detroit on January 16, 2020. Nissan's turbocharged four-cylinder variable-compression engine leverages an industry-first production technology to achieve its goals of offering high levels of power and efficiency from the same powerplant. Monitoring driver inputs several times per second, the engine adjusts the compression ratio from 8:1 to 14:1 as needed, optimizing power and efficiency. The range in capability is derived using a multi-link system that adjusts the length of the piston's stroke, while adjusting the engine's compression ratio on the fly. When the driver demands power, an internal actuator reduces the throw of the connecting rods allowing compression to drop, while tapping the turbocharger for maximum output. Conversely, during highway cruising and other low-power needs, the engine automatically adjusts to a higher compression ratio, offering a significantly higher level of efficiency. more Winners are evaluated based on several factors including horsepower, torque, noise, fuel economy, comparative specifications and applications of new technology. This year, the judges began testing from a group of 26 all-new or vastly improved engines, by putting them through the paces of daily life – commuting, road trips and running errands. To be eligible, a vehicle's base price may not exceed $65,000. "The Nissan VC-Turbo performs complex technical feats that amaze engineers and enthusiasts and provides exciting performance and outstanding fuel economy that everyone can appreciate," says Wards Senior Content Director, Drew Winter. Wards has recognized the pinnacle of automotive powertrain engineering since 1995, and Nissan's achievement for 2020 marks the company's 18th trophy in those 26 years.

All-New 2020 Nissan Versa Joins Rogue and Rogue Sport as Consumer Guide Best Buy Award Winners

Consumer Guideannounced the Rogue, Rogue Sport and all-new 2020 Nissan Versa as winners in its annual Automotive Best Buy Awards. The all-new 2020 Nissan Versa wins the award for the first time, with the Rogue receiving recognition for the 6th consecutive year and Rogue Sport earning its third consecutive award. In choosing its annual winners, Consumer Guide evaluates over 150 new vehicles sold in the United States, selecting only the top vehicles in each class as Best Buys. In addition to objective ratings, a vehicle must also be “a good dollar value” compared to competitors in its class. “We’re over the moon with the recognition the new Versa has received right out of the gate. We worked incredibly hard to deliver a fantastic vehicle and are extremely proud to be recognized by Consumer Guide for this achievement, said Rob Warren, director, and chief marketing manager, Nissan North America. more The all-new, third-generation Versa was a subcompact car winner for the first time. The refined and exciting sedan sports an expressive exterior, fresh interior and top-line technology that’s a rarity in its class. In addition to Nissan Safety Shield 360, the Versa includes Intelligent Driver Alertness, Intelligent Cruise Control – all at an incredible price point. Nissan’s best-selling vehicle, Rogue topped the competitive class of compact crossovers for the 6th year in a row. Offering a highly desirable combination of ample interior roominess at an affordable price, it’s the perfect vehicle for everyday use and family getaways. The 2020 Rogue features Rear Door Alert (RDA), the innovative Divide-N-Hide Cargo System and available Motion-Activated Liftgate in addition to advanced driver-assistance technology like ProPILOT Assist, Nissan Safety Shield 360 and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive. The Nissan Rogue Sport topped the subcompact crossover category for the 3rd consecutive year. The “right-sized” vehicle slots just under the popular Rogue but stands on its own with stylish, nimble and fun-to-drive appeal while providing similar advanced technologies and notable features. "Awarded three Best Buys for 2020, Nissan continues to demonstrate its ability to deliver high-value small vehicles that are high in content, rewarding to drive, and well suited for the lifestyles of busy Americans," said Tom Appel, publisher, Consumer Guide.
