Nissan Proves How Much "Innovation for the planet" Encompasses

That catchy slogan from Nissan isn't just there to appeal to those who care about the environment. Rather, the Japanese automaker really is looking to do better for the world every day, and we here at Passport Nissan love reporting on it. The latest innovation involves how vehicles make it from production in Spain to dealerships in Northern Europe and Russia.

The answer comes in the form of an environmentally-friendly transport ship called the "City of St. Petersburg." That's right, Nissan actually built a gigantic boat for the sake of efficiently transporting their vehicles. Has any other automaker gone so far to stay green?

Either way, the "City of St. Petersburg" isn't just a big step in the right direction for the automotive industry... Rather, it features some serious improvements that the nautical world could learn from too! "You can say that the ship's spherical prow design is the world's first," explains Satoshi Yako, Nissan Motors. "Thanks to this aerodynamic design we expect to see a substantial reduction in the ship's fuel consumption."1

More specifically, this new design reduces wind resistance, which then translates into greater fuel savings and fewer emissions. Another way that the company sought to improve fuel economy of the ship was to integrate a suite of lightweight materials into the design. And from the sounds of it, each of these measures paid off big time for the company.

After all, the ship is able to perform the same duty as similar ships - transporting 2,000 vehicles at a time -  and it's able to do so while producing significantly less CO2.
