Nissan Seeks to Develop New EV and Hybrid Variants by 2016

The release of the Nissan LEAF marked an important milestone for our favorite Japanese automaker, and one that others are still trying to achieve. In creating the LEAF, however, Nissan has forgotten to diversify their lineup with models other than pure electrics, which is something that they're actively working to change.
In fact, new reports are indicating that Nissan could have a plug-in hybrid variant of the already popular Nissan Versa in the works. This is something that we here at Passport Nissan fully support, as it means that drivers in the greater Alexandria area will soon be able to have more vehicles to choose from when going green.
The new hybrid and plug-in variants of the Versa are being developed as a part of the company's new "Nissan Green Program 2016" plan, which promises to reduce the company's own carbon footprint as well as that of its drivers in a shift towards more renewable energy.
We should also note, however, that it isn't only hybrid and plug-in variants that are a part of this new strategy. Rather, Nissan is hoping to improve its fuel economy by 35 percent in comparison to its 2005 lineup, which would be a substantial gain for the company. Furthermore, they're also redesign their vehicles to give them fresh looks across the board by this time.
"Nissan wants to be part of the solution toward a sustainable society - for the sake of the planet and as a significant competitive advantage and a strategic differentiator in the global manufacturing sector," said Nissan President Carlos Ghosn.1
